Jazz Education Initiative
A research and jazz artist-in-residence initiative impacting K-12 students. It includes the integration of a jazz education curriculum aligned to State Standards for Arts and Humanities. This unique program involves music educators and performance and music education majors at regional universities. An added component is the use of technology for dissemination of project activities, materials and information.
The hand-on experiences include skill development in improvisation and teamwork. Jazz music creation and presentation occur at the schools with professional development session for music teachers hosted at MCG Jazz, at partners’ schools and/or at other arts organization facilities.
School of Swing
This music-based youth education program discusses jazz vocabulary, history, themes, techniques and styles of jazz and promotes jazz awareness. School of Swing is designed as a sequence of learning activities giving children an appreciation of jazz as an art form, its uniquely American historical context and prepares a foundation for performing jazz and incorporating its techniques in their creative expressions.
Youth in the Mix
MCG Jazz offers student ensembles the opportunity to tour and utilize its world-class recording studio and concert hall where jazz legends have recorded several GRAMMY® Award-winning projects. Student ensembles can range from a small recorder group to a full jazz ensemble or show choir.
The students get the experience of working with an expert recording and production team. Students will explore professional quality microphones, ProTools digital audio software, professional studio and mixing environment, broadcast quality video capture system and producing techniques use by award-winning producers and engineers.
Jazz Insights
Interactive discussions that provide students and their families with the chance to interact with MCG Jazz concert series visiting artists. Students are encouraged to ask questions to make this a unique and personal experience.
