SATURDAY STAFF STORIES:
Ashley Boynes-Shuck
Q: How long have you been with MCG Jazz?
A: I have been with MCG Jazz since October, 2024—so just a little over 3 months.
Q: What do you do at MCG Jazz?
A: I am the Data & Enterprise Manager, and I split the role with another arts nonprofit called Attack Theatre. At MCG Jazz, I have largely been working on marketing, social media, and publicity, but look forward to also helping with some future projects relating to data, the radio show, and more.
Q: Do you have a mentor? If so, tell us about them.
A: This is always a tough question for me. I have had many mentors in academia, professionally, and in my personal life. But I truly feel that every person who I cross paths with each day has the potential to be a teacher, mentor, or inspiration in some way—sometimes, without them even knowing it.
Q: What do you love most about what you do?
A: Everything! I absolutely love music—it’s an essential part of life. Music and writing have always been a big part of who I am. Being surrounded by music and creativity at work is so inspiring, motivating, and energizing. The arts are vital, and I’m passionate about what we contribute to the community and the world of jazz. It’s been amazing to see concerts come to life and to sit in on album recordings—it’s truly a dream for someone like me who has an interest in every part of music and live entertainment, from beginning to end.
Q: Tell us a surprising or a fun fact about you.
A: My favorite rock band, Bush, once sang Happy Birthday to me! Also, I am a little obsessed with anything related to outer space and true crime.
Q: What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
A: I have a lot of hobbies! I love birdwatching, kayaking, going to concerts, reading, antiquing, boating, writing, pilates, and traveling—and of course spending time with my husband, pets, family, and friends. I’m also an advocate for people with rheumatic and autoimmune conditions.
Q: What type of jazz is your favorite to listen to/play?
A: Well, as a rock gal at heart, I am continuing to learn more about jazz every day—and MCG Jazz is the perfect place to do so! I like unique vocalists; I also really dig jazz with a rock or blues feel. Musicians will know what I mean when I say I like “anything that results in a stank face.” And, I do play guitar, ukulele, and piano by ear … but not very well. (Still, I nonetheless really enjoy it!)
Q: What is something that has surprised you about working at MCG Jazz?
A: I was amazed to learn that MCG Jazz has won GRAMMY Awards and that this incredible organization was right here in Pittsburgh! For years, I had no idea this gem of a venue—complete with a radio station, recording studio, and record label—was in the Steel City. But the biggest (and best) surprise has been how kind and welcoming everyone is—it truly feels like a family and fosters a wonderful sense of belonging. After a career detour in tech, being back in an arts-focused environment has been an absolute gift.
Q: Who is an artist you want to see perform at MCG Jazz and why?
A: It’s tough to choose! Samara Joy, Esperanza Spalding, or hometown guy Jeff Goldblum would be fantastic. Laufey, the young Icelandic pop-jazz singer, also wowed me with her NPR Tiny Desk Concert. So she would be cool. Or maybe Lady Gaga could bring her ‘Jazz & Piano’ Vegas show to Pittsburgh—hey, a girl can dream! Honestly, though, every show at MCG Jazz is fantastic. I’m especially excited for the upcoming Late Night Stories show with Ray Angry, Will Lee, Joe Saylor, and Felicia Collins—it’s going to be amazing!
